History of Mosaic Design

The longevity of decorative mosaics is perhaps best exemplified by the fact that some of the first instances of this art form were found in temples in modern-day Iraq almost 5,000 years ago. Since then, civilizations across the world have used mosaic tiles to decorate and design all types of buildings from churches and schools to hospitals and galleries. Romans referred to individual tiles as ‘tesserae’, which in effect were small pieces of stone, beads or any other material that could be arranged from an original image. Using carefully selected stone or shell, the Romans designed some of the most decadent designs that were works of art.

How is Commercial Mosaic Tile Laid Out?

The answer to this question is very much dependent on the type of project that you are hoping to install for your business. In general, we glue and lay our commercial mosaic designs on mesh-mounting. From there, we cut it down and create a map that your installer can easily put together on site. In contrast to our regular mosaic tiles, our field tiles are generally sent loose and can be installed in a pre-determined pattern by you. However, it is still possible for this to be laid out on mesh-mounting as well. Irrespective whether it is sent loose or on mesh-mounting, you can rest assured that it will be securely packed in boxes and arrive ready for you to install.
